The ‘Santa Bernarda’ has a rich maritime history dating back to its construction in 1968 on the French Atlantic coast in Bayonne as the fishing vessel ‘Le Trident’.
After years of service in the North Atlantic, it retired from fisheries in 1992. In 1995, the vessel found a new purpose as a tourist attraction when it was acquired by our company, Santa Bernarda Cruzeiros Lda. Extensive renovations and modernisations were undertaken at the giant shipyard near Portimão’s old bridge, to preserve its heritage while enhancing its functionality with modern sailing equipment and on-board conveniences.
Since October 2020, the ‘Santa Bernarda’, has operated regularly from the Port of Portimão, where is it affectionately referred to as the ‘Pirate Ship’. Due to its uniqueness and distinct character the ship has also been featured in TV commercials for brands including Doritos and KFC.
Offering cruises that not only showcase its history but also reflect the company’s ethos of environmental responsibility and sustainability, Santa Bernarda Cruzeiros is committed to caring for the marine environment, and strives to provide memorable experiences while doing its best to preserve the natural beauty of the Algarve coast.
Each team member has extensive experience at sea and in navigating the intricate caves along the Algarve coastline. Behind the scenes, our office colleagues provide diligent support, ensuring that all our clients’ needs and enquiries are handled efficiently and professionally.
Guests can find comfortable seating options on the shaded mid-deck, top deck, aft-salon, or galley.
The Santa Bernarda is equipped with the latest safety and rescue equipment, complying with EU regulations for maritime safety. Before embarking on the cruise, our crew provides comprehensive safety information in English, ensuring a secure journey.
Passengers can enjoy a variety of drinks and snacks at our “Pirate bar” and protected indoor salon.
Life jackets are available onboard for your comfort and convenience.
Parking: Portimão – Rua Gonçalo Nascimento, 6. Next to the boarding pier, Vasco da Gama. Parking can be restricted, when public events go on.
Boarding will start at 15 min. before departure.
We start in time. No waiting for late passengers.
The visit inside the caves can be restricted by orders of the Port Captain, Maritime Police, without any previous information. No cancellation or refund is accepted in this situation.
The Santa Bernarda Ship will always navigate along the Coast and Caves. Prevention against sea sickness is included.
